Curious for some throwback suggestions to rile up your summer?
Well, it is no secret that if you have lived during the early 2000s, Janet Jackson was the ultimate destination for party-ready and feel-good records. One of her club smashes “Someone to Call My Lover” (2001) still gets instant rotation to this very day, just ask Radio Disney who awarded the lovely legend recently with an icon award as presented by Raven-Symoné.
But as we rewind to the “Ventura Highway”-sampled hit, let us also appreciate its music video.
Directed by Dave Meyers, the video opens with Jackson clothed in southwestern desert-stylized wear drifting along a dirt road. The scenes intercut to her dancing as she coos and oohs to the camera of her adoration for a mystery man (played by Jermaine Dupri).
Jackson is then seen at a local karaoke bar, lovingly observing many young lovers in the public crowd as they bump ‘n jam to the beat of “Someone” as Jackson stays positioned at her table patiently waiting for her lover. The video continues on out with further scenes of the clubgoers getting frisky with one another as Jackson sits atop the karaoke machine before cutting away to vinyl records shuffling.
The video would go on to not only score her a BET Award nomination, but also would snag her a Grammy nod as well. The song itself entered great success; peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 nationwide for several weeks.
So if you are outside chillin’ like a villain in the heat, don’t be shy in adding Ms. Jackson to your summertime groove playlist for the occasion:
