Welcome to our new segment #MixtapeMondays, where we at True Exclusives plan to highlight some of our favorite mix-tapes (old and new), and feature new indie projects that have been sent to us for our own personal reviews.
For our second #MixtapeMonday feature, we would like to head back to the East Coast, and highlight Harlem native, Teyana Taylor.Taylor has just released a brand new EP, VII #thecassettetape 1994. Like her debut album VII, the songs are heavily influenced by ’90s R&B and features producers like Da Internz, JR Rotem, J Hill, among others. The references are far more direct as Taylor pulls from the following classic songs from that era and reimagines them: BBD’s “Poison,” Tony! Toni! Toné!’s “Anniversary,” and K.P. and Envyi’s “Swing My Way.”
We are truly impressed by how Tey has managed to take us on a musical journey, yet keep us on trend as she fuses current radio styles with that old skool’ feel good sound. Taylor is currently a part of Chris Brown’s One Hell of a Nite tour alongside Omarion, Kid Ink, and Fetty Wap, and fans are even more anxious for the R&B singer to drop hints on a sophmore release.
Get into Teyana’s fresh mix-tape below, and email us a link to your project at [email protected] with “#MixtapeMondays” in the subject field, to have us review and possibly feature your mix-tape as our next #MixtapeMonday highlight!
