Lykke Li is a Swedish singer-songwriter that emerged in 2007 with a song called, “little bit.” She sounds like Cyndi Lauper mixed with Nelly Furtado and I have been interested in her unique point of view since I first heard her. However, I first learned about Lykke Li when I heard Brandy Norwood song” Let Me Go” was a sample from Lykke’s song “tonight.” There was something interesting in her voice and I knew that I should keep a close eye on her. I found out my intuition was right about her when she released the song “Love Me Like I’m Not Made of Stone.” There was so much pain in her voice and strength in the lyrics I thought there would be something special with this album. In contrast, I did not want to make a premature assumption of the album until I heard other songs.
In April, Lykke released “No Rest for the Wicked” and I knew my assumption was right. Her voice resonated over beating of the drums in her background. Lykke Li is showing she is not trying to be sensational like mainstream artist; instead, she is trying to give her heart in lyrical art. I knew the album would be a heartfelt, emotional, triumph for Lykke. Then she released “Gunshot” which reaffirmed my thoughts. The song is so upbeat but eerie at the same time and reminisces the 80’s. Lykke is an artist to keep your eyes on and hears open too. Lykke third album entitled, “I Never Learn”, is set to be released May 6, 2014 on ITunes.
