Jojo, made famous by her teenage hit “Leave (Get Out)” turned 23 today and she decided celebrate it with her fans through Instagram @translucentbrownsugar and her family.
She seemed to be keeping the merriment to a minimum, posting pics of her and her Boston native family as well as a couple of drinks and good company. For the last year she has been doing her thing in L.A. and getting her feet wet with such artists as Austin Brown relative of the late Michael Jackson, Leah LaBelle protege to Pharell Williams and released another mixtape named after her dog “Agape”. One of the songs from that mixtape “Billions” was directly inspired by her family and home state so I’m sure she’s enjoying the quality time. Among all of the good vibes going on during her birthday she also hinted toward her predicament with label Blackground Records over IG, hash tagging #freejojo.
In 2003 Joanna Levesque then 13 was signed to Blackground Records and soon after, “JoJo” released her first single “Leave (Get Out)”. Since then she has not been able to break from her contract and make her own music and as a result is fighting her label for release from her contract. JoJo has such an amazing voice and it’s unfortunate to see things play out like this. It’s definitely good to see her keeping up a positive attitude through it all. Last year she released her mixtape on her birthday so here’s to hoping a new year brings new music from this amazing artist.
