It’s been 4 days since the death of Civil Right’s activist; Nelson Mandela and as expected many are grieving the loss while simultaneously celebrating the life of this great man. South Carolina sheriff, Rick Clark however; has decided to defy the orders of the president by refusing to lower the flag outside the sheriff’s office to half-staff. His reasoning? Mandela was not American.
Clark took to Facebook on Friday to announce his decision stating that, “Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!!”. After finding that many were outraged by his decision, he made a point to say that Obama’s order was a proclamation and has no force of law. He also states that he would have made the exact same decision if he had been in office when George W. Bush made a similar request, after the death of Pope John Paul II.
The flag was lowered to half-staff on Friday to honor a Florence County Deputy who was killed in a wreck and on Saturday for Pearl Harbor remembrance but was returned to full staff by Sunday, even though Obama ordered that they be kept at half-staff through sunset, Monday.
A spokesperson for the department says, “He’s not breaking a law. It’s his decision. And I support the decision of the sheriff,”.
