‘Luck is when preparation meets the opportunity,’ says Big Sean.
In Noisey’s 60-second series, Made In A Minute, rapper Big Sean quickly talks how his mother played a great deal in helping him form his artistry today. Growing up, Sean’s mother played oldie favorites like The Temptations and Marvin Gaye, and while Sean admittedly didn’t care for those songs back then, he now has a greater appreciation for them now.
It’s good because a lot of that good music I love now; I hated then. I don’t really listen to rap too much. I listen to the oldies—people like Marvin Gaye, Al Green.
The multi-platinum rapper also shared how he battled other MCs at a local radio station every Friday night when he was 12, and how those years of practice and building up his confidence prepared him for that moment he’d deliver in front of Kanye at that very radio station.
