Elijah Blake; songwriter and “XOX” singer is no stranger to cranking out hits. As one of the most prolific songwriters in the industry, Blake has worked with everyone from Usher to Keyshia Cole. Now preparing to release his debut album “Songs About Melody”, the singer sat down for an exclusive interview with Kempire Radio to talk about his past projects as well as the new album.
How did you come to write Usher’s smash hit single “Climax” ?
“That song came about – the whole session he [Usher] kept saying ‘I’ve been able to see the world, I’ve seen it so many times and I want to do something fresh, something new but I don’t want my R&B fans who have been rocking with me so long to feel neglected’,”.
He then went on to say, “Diplo had this track and I heard the soulful melody so I kept just doing the [sings] “we’re going nowhere fast we’ve reached the climax”, and once I sung that he said, ‘that’s it, don’t change that, let’s move and continue’, and he had some input and I put in input and by the end of the night we came out with an amazing song.”
Are you in between working on your own album and working for other people? There was a picture of yourself in the studio with Keyshia Cole recently:
“Keyshia is like my sister, there’s just a genuine family love for that woman she’s just so real and down to earth. Anytime she calls I’m there, whatever she needs. I’m really close to her family, her kids, her husband. She’s like a sister to me, she supports me.
Blake revealed later in the interview that he is working with Cole on her new album, and they’ll go “full fledged” when she gets to L.A in the next few weeks.
“I can’t say too much but, it’s going to be fun. People have never heard Keyshia in the form that we’re about to take her.”
You said on Twitter that you were going to talk about some “newness”. What can fans expect from you, what’s coming up?:
“All I can say is, No I.D. approached me about an idea, because as a new artist the roll out of an album is super important. You can have the best music in the world but if the timing is not right, if all the ducks aren’t lined up you just don’t want to just put it out because you’re doing an injustice to yourself, you’re doing an injustice to your fans and you’re doing an injustice to the most important aspect which is the music.
Blake says that he is finding “creative ways” to feed bits and pieces of his music to his fans ‘who discovered him with “Bijoux 22 and the people who will discover him on the album, “Songs About Melody’. His mixtape “Bijoux 22” is currently available to download, and the album is expected to be released in the upcoming months.
Just from listening to a few things off his mixtape, I can tell you right now that Elijah Blake and his music is not something to sleep on!
