Let me start this off with a disclaimer: This album review may be a bit bias as I personally think Kanye is a genius. I will try to keep my personal feelings to a minimum.
I attended the listening session for Kanye’s new album Yeezus which took place in a loading dock at Milk studios. Kanye started off the night with a few rants (as expected) and explained that he wanted this album to be different all around, which is why he didn’t release any singles or videos prior to the launch. Mr. West stated that “this album is all about giving no fucks at all”. His lyrics were sure to back up that statement as the night progressed with lines like “I can’t handle my liquor and these bitches can’t handle me” and “I ate her pu**y all I need was sweet and sour sauce”.
The album overall has an uptempo eclectic feel, full of club bangers including a toxic sample from “Strange Fruit”. The beats all have an 80’s dance type of sound, which may lead some to question if this album should even be in the hip hop category. On the flip side the lyrics make it easy to appeal to your darker side, which is sure to have fans speculating yet again of Yeezy’s involvement with the “illuminati”. The lyrics are dark, arrogant, and raunchy. I think Kanye fans will understand it but new listeners of Mr. West may not get it, which means you will either love the cd or hate it. Ye didn’t leave much room for any gray areas. This album is definitely a bit more controversial than the rest of Kanye’s CD’s with constant references to him being a God. “I am a God” happens to be a name of one of the tracks, where he raps “I spoke to Jesus, he said what up Yeezus”.
Kanye has definitely out done himself with this one. Dare I say this album just may end up being one to add to the list of classics. Kudos to Kanye for continuing to push the envelope and expressing himself freely without fear of scrutiny. The album is definitely one of one and will more than likely pave the way for rappers to become more experimental with their beats. I give this album a perfect 10 and can’t wait to see what it does on Sound Scan.
