As an up and coming artist trying to break into a Beyoncé-Rihanna-Nicki dominated field, it may be a bit discouraging. However, having an undeniable and extraordinary talent that can captivate only aids your fight. In the case of singer/songwriter Jade Novah, she has half the battle won already. It doesn’t hurt that the Cleveland, Ohio native was nurtured and mentored under industry genius Missy Elliott.
After several attempts at stardom with different aspiring girl groups, a meeting with Elliott is what landed Jade her big chance. She provided background vocals on Missy’s platinum 2003 release “This Is Not a Test”. Along with others such as Brandy, the late Whitney Houston and Destiny’s Child, Novah cites Elliott as one of her strongest influences. “Missy mentored me and taught me how to write outside the box. I admire her so much as a songwriter and as an artist,” That influence is strongly displayed on Jade’s official mix tape “Shades of Jade”. On the 12 track set, Jade offers the NOVAHcanes, the name she affectionately calls her followers, a quick glimpse into her potential. She covers multiple hits that can currently be found on the top 40 charts, as well a few blasts from the past.
With brilliant sequencing, vocals and arrangements all throughout, Jade makes her versions on quite a few of these covers, dare we say better than the originals. Highlights include “All Back”-Chris Brown, “It Will Rain”-Bruno Mars, and “Call Me Maybe/Domino” a mash-up of Carly Rae Jepsen and Jessie J’s current hits. However, one of the standout tracks by far is her take on current reigning diva, Beyoncé’s “Countdown”. Vocally and musically, Jade is giving Bey’s a run for her money with a performance we would love to see live. Additionally, she does a stellar mash-up of the 1985 Cyndi Lauper hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” & Whitney Houston’s 1987 hit, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”. The amazing transition between the two is effortless and so brilliant we wonder why none of her predecessors had thought of the pairing. Elsewhere, with Jade’s original songs such as “Sticks and Stones”, it is clear why artist such as Mya, Melanie Fiona, & Christina Milian have utilized her writing skills. These songs could easily be radio and billboard hits right now.
“Shades of Jade” leaves you excited and ready to hear more. We are anticipating future offerings including her debut album “In Search of Me” tentatively set for release this year. Artist like Jade are a rarity and we are more than positive she will soon step out of the shade, and into the spotlight where she belongs.
