Grammy Award winning reggae star Buju Banton has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in setting up a cocaine deal in 2009, according to BBC News. He will follow his sentence with 5 years probation. Much of the court-case relied on video and audio recordings taken by an informant and by Drug Enforcement Administration personnel. One video showed Banton apparently tasting cocaine in a Florida warehouse.
Banton said in a statement: “The man is not dead. Don’t call him a ghost. The days that lie ahead are filled with despair, but I have courage and grace and I’m hopeful, and that is sufficient to carry me through.”
Banton’s last album, ‘Before The Dawn’, won Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.
